Movie Review : Lakshmi not for the faint hearted

It's not for the faint hearted. If you are looking for entertainment then Nagesh Kukunoor's extremely disturbing film Lakshmi about the menace of child prostitution is not something you should be heading the theatres for. Also, if you do not have the stomach to digest brutally graphic violent scenes, you may not want to spend that Rs.200 on a multiplex ticket, where this film is most likely to find a limited release.

Yet, Kukunoor and his co-producer Elahe Hiptoolah's brave effort to delve into a subject of this kind is laudable. At a desolate location in a forest when girls who have barely reached puberty are lined up by Chinna (Nagesh Kukunoor), you already have guessed the doom that awaits the prettiest girl in the group, Lakshmi (Monali Thakur). She is singled out by Reddy Garu (Satish Kaushik), a rich, powerful influential man in a small village in Andhra Pradesh to be taken home. Therein also lies the problem. You have guessed it already. There is nothing revelatory or insightful that Nagesh offers about the tragic lives of prostitutes. As a result the first half of the film which tracks Lakhmi's forcible journey into prostitution, although painfully troubling is not at a story level enthusing.

The film is based on a true-story of the first convicted case of child prostitution in Andhra Pradesh. Kukunoor's film is inspiring for it brings to light the valiant effort that Lakshmi puts forth into dragging her perpetrators to the court. It highlights the intense hardship, pressure and indignity she has to go through to ensure the guilty are punished.

Kukunoor's manner of the showing you the sordidness of Lakshmi's plight is to bombard you with images of extreme graphic violence and scenes which are cringe worthy. The kind which will want you to throw up or close your eyes at the torture the protagonist is going through. In a particularly disturbing scene when Lakshmi is running high fever and has suffered a deep wound on her leg, when she is barely alive, you are shown that she is forced to service six to seven clients in one night. You are left wondering does the director have to show this? Could he have not been less brutal and suggested the violence than actually asking you to stomach it?

The good part is that the film does not degenerate into hyperbolic courtroom fight towards the climax. Yet, the way the courtroom proceedings take place, they do not elicit strong response in you as a viewer.

Luckily, Kukunoor is supported by a team of good actors. Of the cast, Shefali Shah is brilliant in her dual role of an evil-kind madam of the brothel. Satish Kaushik is successful in making you want to hate him with his restrained villainy. As the scheming pimp Kukunoor is flat and is not the best actor of the movie. Monali Thakur impresses you in a role that must have been undoubtedly very tough to essay. Her expressive eyes and her innocent face stay with you after the film is over. Lakshmi is not a film that can be recommended easily to everyone but Monali Thakur, the singer (She sang the dulcet Sawar loon in Lootera) turned actor is definitely someone to watch out for.

Movie Review Samrat & Co.

Verdict - A fun watch for the family. The whodunnit is a bit easy to crack but the detective and his sidekick are fun to watch

Bollywood has been missing a good detective and now Rajeev Khandelwal as Samrat Tilakdhari (STD for short) and Gopal Dutt as his sidekick Chakradhar Pandey (CD) make a welcome appearance.

Though their first outing at cracking a case is a bit amateur (ok, more than a bit amateur), it is still a fun watch. Rajiv Khandelwal looks dashing and also dashes around when a brainwave grips him, (its another matter that the brainwave occurred to us at least 15 minutes before him). He has a slightly dimwitted sidekick who runs a TV show with ‘sansani’ stories and he is quite a good foil. What I liked is that there is no tomfoolery or slapstick humour. The detective takes himself seriously and so does the sidekick and that sort of gets you involved into the story.

A garden starts mysteriously dying after a mali who had been fired by the rich industrialist dies after cursing it. There is talk of a bhoot floating around and STD is called in by the pretty young daughter to solve the case. Off they go to a weird looking bungalow in Simla (which has lots of painted pine trees in the background) to solve the case. I’m not getting into the story here, not much point in a whodunit I think.

Some of the stuff is unintentionally funny such as when the police is unable to crack a code and they float a theory that is an ancient African language. Voila! STD sees Hardy Boys mystery novels in the library and cracks the code which as it turns out is what we used in school all along in our secret societies.

There are plenty of zany dialogues from STD such as “Seedhi challenges tooti pencil ki tarah hoti hai. They have no point.” Unfortunately, you can’t understand half of them since STD delivers them at breakneck speed, no doubt to keep up with the lightening speed at which his brain moves.

Should you see this movie? One time toh banta hai, for the sheer novelty of the whole thing. Kids above 8 may even enjoy solving the mystery. I think young Kavita Barjatya has a good thing on her hand. A smarter story next time will make STD and CD into a good entertaining pair on screen.

Final words overheard from couple behind me: Rajeej Khandelwal achha hai, lekin Robert Downey Jr as Sherlock was a bit better. There, hp gjhrsf.  Simple code, don’t need STD to crack it.

Revolver Rani Title Song Lyrics

Picturised on: Kangana Ranaut, Vir Das, Piyush Mishra, Zeishan Quadri & others
Music Label: T-Series

(Alka, Please apne aap ko surrender kar do
Police force ne tumhe charo ore se gher liya hai)

Ha ha ha.. Surrender?

Zehreeli tarannum ka hissa hai
Yeh shehar-e-jahannum ka qissa hai
Yahaan bandookon ke paas bhasha hai
Mohabbat ka khooni tamasha hai

Iss bhasad mein ek thi Rani
Baroodon ka woh pee ke paani
Pattharon paalne mein paida hui woh nashtari..

Revolver Rani ki thaayn, thaayn, thaayn
Hai jungli jawaani ki thaayn, thaayn, thaayn
Revolver Rani ki thaayn, thaayn, thaayn
Hai jungli jawaani ki thaayn, thaayn, thaayn

(Thaane se report aa gayi hai sir
Chhati ghati ki firing ke piche Alka ka hi hath tha
Oh damn it! Alka Alka Alka
Ye cheez kya hai Alka ??)

Tili baba ba ba ba dui da
Tili baba ba ba ba dui da
Taaye ro, taay ro, taay ro, taay ro, taay
ha ha ha ha..

Uske khilono mein khanjar tha, kenchi thi
Uski hatheli pe chhaala tha
Uske gharati bhi bichhoo thhe, billi thi
Usko sayyaron ne paala tha
Aayi jawaani toh woh janaani
Kheli apno ke khoon se, junoon se
Jungle ko jeeta, mutthi mein bheencha
Uske phira na jee saki sukoon se

Phir qisse mein jo mod aaya
Dil churaane jo chor aaya
Woh tha gudda aankh neeli zehreeli soorat liye
Kari uss kameene ne thaayn thaayn thaayn
Mohabbat ke seene mein thaayn thaayn thaayn

Revolver Rani ki thaayn, thaayn, thaayn
Hai jungli jawaani ki thaayn, thaayn, thaayn

Woh khooni daldal ke manzar mein rehti thi
Par uske sapne salone thhe
Uski haveli mein jhoomar thhe, naukar thhe
Kaanton ke lekin bichhu bhi thhe
Kaante nikaale hanske uchhaale
Gham ke samandar ko pee gayi majaak mein
Uski mohabbat thi aisi hadd tak
Jaise jeeta ho ishq inquilab mein

Aasmaan bhi dehal ke roya
Bijliyon mein machal ke roya
Maut jis din gungunayi
Saanson mein uski suno
Yeh uski kahaani hai thaayn, thaayn, thaayn
Yeh sabko zabaani hai thaayn, thaayn, thaayn

Revolver Rani ki thaayn, thaayn, thaayn
Hai jungli jawaani ki thaayn, thaayn, thaayn

(Bad news hai sir,
Hum Alka ko nahi pakad paaye,
Mujhe maaloom tha. Damn it!)

Dekh Tamasha Dekh - Movie Review

Routinely, we love to sweep the truth about Hindu-Muslim relations under the carpet. Or simply sugar-coat it to make the actual volume of mutual distrust and animosity palatable to a nation steeped in escapism and self-delusion.

Dekh Tamasha Dekh (DTD), directed by theatre legend Feroz Abbas Khan (of Tumhari Amrita fame) is a jolting wake-up call for a nation swept into a slumberous silence by the status quo. Put simply, we don't want to face the reality about the friction that simmers just under the surface among the two communities.

DTD is perhaps the first Hindi film which ventures into the vista of vitriolic without the fear of offending the more refined sections of the audience who may not be comfortable watching the vanguards and trouble-makers of the two communities addressing each other with the harshest of epithets.

This is not a film about niceties. The director doesn't allow the narrative to nibble daintily at corrosive socio-political matters. Rather, the narrative chews industriously on the political issues. By using the twin missiles of satire and irony, he brings into a play a kind of pinned-down provocativeness into the plot whereby the characters become real and representational simultaneously.

Miraculously, the film is both a parable and a topical comment on communal relations. This is a film that takes burning headlines and converts them into slices of incriminating illustration on man and the beast within. The smell of authenticity pervades the destiny of the political-driven nefariously motivated characters.

Jhoote nashe jahaan me kabhi

Holiday Official Theatrical Trailer Ft. Akshay Kumar

> Holiday - Tu Hi Toh Hai Song Ft. Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha

Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh in ‘Housefull 3′

The popular franchise Housefull under Sajid Nadiadwala’s banner, is now set for a third installment. Housefull and Housefull 2 were huge hits, despite being released during the IPL period. The franchise is known for having an ensemble cast, and Housefull 3 will be no different. While, Akshay Kumar and Riteish Deshmukh shall once again be a part of the series, Abhishek Bachchan will now join the cast. A source close to the project confirms, “As of now, Akshay, Abhishek and Riteish have been confirmed for the film, the scripting of which is already in progress.”

The female actors haven’t been finalised. Bachchan and Kumar had last worked together in the 2002 release Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya Hai. Also, Riteish Deshmukh and Abhishek Bachchan are still being appreciated for their on-screen camaraderie in Rohan Sippy’s Bluffmaster. Incidentally, all three actors are known for their comic timing, and are best suited to be a part of this comic caper. While Housefull and Housefull 2 were directed by Sajid Khan, the third part will be helmed by writersturned directors Sajid-Farhad.

They have recently wrapped up their film It’s Entertainment, which also stars Akshay Kumar. The film was slated to release in May-June, but will now release on August 8. Housefull 3 may go on floors in the last quarter of this year, after It’s Entertainment releases and the actors have finished their projects. Kumar is busy shooting for Gabbar, while his other film Holiday is set to release in June. Riteish Deshmukh also has Excel Entertainment’s Bangistan, after Ek Villain.

Katrina Kaif shoots for more than 12 hours a day for Bang Bang!

Actress Katrina Kaif, who is currently busy shooting for ‘Bang Bang‘, seems to have impressed the entire unit with her dedication and professionalism.

Sources close to the movie say that Katrina has been shooting for more than 12 hours a day on the sets..

A source said, “Katrina has many action sequences in the movie and she has not only refused a body double, but has also shot for more than 12 hours a day despite the grueling schedule. Her commitment to work and her dedication has inspired everyone else around her.”

Movie Review - 2 States

Magically, "2 States" ends with a beautifully staged wedding where the film's culture-crossed couple finally get their wish.

Sigh of relief? Not quite. This is a film you don't want to end. It's a story....but wait, it doesn't seem like a story!! Not in the sense of 'Once upon a time when Boy Met Girl'. You know exactly where our twosome, the gorgeous Ananya and the diffident Krish are going...But you get so sucked into their journey, their courtship, conflicts, tiffs and buts, that you feel after a point that you aren't watching them in a film. They are people we know. And love.

Some come, fall in love.

These are people whom you'll carry home and keep in some corner of your heart. Not just (gorgeous) Ananya (who incidentally is played by the very gorgeous Alia Bhatt) and her other-half Krish, but also their parents, specially Krish's father a man so misunderstood all his life he fears being recognized for some deeply-concealed goodness in his heart that comes out towards the end of this film (that you wish would never end).

Indian marriages, they say, are the marriage of two families. Sure enough, when the shy repressed Punjabi Krish meets the spunky spirited beer-guzzling, chicken-chewing Ananya, there is hell to pay from both sides.

The thing about cultural stereotyping is that it very often does exist in exactly the forms that we see them exist in films and books. Chetan Bhagat's lively novel from which this film is adapted, harps on the stereotypes in a way where we don't see the characters as "types" but as individuals who conform to a type. This delectable game of slotting the individual is best illustrated by Krish's loud-brassy Punjabi mom who behaves likes a cross between Kirron Kher and what Vidya Balan in Rajkumar Gupta's "Ghanchakkar" would have been had she grown older and had a son.

Oh yes, Revathi as Ananya's graceful Tamil mother is also outstanding, though Amrita's performance would easily shout her down in the Who Is The Better Mother contest.

Amrita Singh's true-to-type Punjabi housewife's character (you know the kind who has given herself the liberty to say the most insulting things to people who are not like her) gradually melts down in the narrative as her dark secret shame - "a drunken abusive husband" - comes out in the open.

Ronit Roy, that fine actor is no stranger to playing the abusive father. It's amazing how empathetic he makes the discernibly brutish character in "Udaan" and now this film without taking the character's arc through the filmy range from villainy to repentance. Thanks to Roy's dignified damned Dad's act, "2 States" is as much a father-son story as a girl-boy thing.

Not every sequence works here. I found Revathi's singing performance (arranged by Krish) a little too syrupy and Alia's anti-dowry speech at a brassy Punjabi wedding a little too contrived.

Minor slip-ups.

Most of the time cultural differences are articulately pinned down in the film. Debutant director Abhishek Varman knows how to tell a story embedding individual scenes with a distinctive personality without straining for effect. The narrative traverses a number of cities - Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai - searching out enchanting pockets of storytelling for the couple to grow into.

This is a film that never forgets to surprise even when going about the task of telling a story that can only end one way. Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt ensure that their mutual participation in the rites of courtship, copulation, conflict and reconciliation yields a harvest of hefty scenes. Their performances display a natural flair for understatement underlined by a deep understanding of the language of commercial cinema. And yes, they look so made for each other, their compatibility is almost karmic.

Two world, two cultures, two families, one love story...."2 States" re-defines and rejuvenates the love-marriage space.Simple and yet striking, gorgeous and graceful, this is a film where we come away hankering to know what happens to the couple after the film is over.

The film is put together with the stress on lightness of tone. From the clothes that Ananya and Krish wear to the spaces they inhabit... you won't find them fueling a filmy flamboyance into the narrative. Binod Pradhan's cinematography is the opposite of epic. And that's the truth which these urban characters represent.

And yes, Alia dressed as a bride looks like a doll. In a way the honesty that her face never ceases to express symbolizes what this film strives to do. "2 States" creates a world where characters don't shout to be heard. They just belong to a world where being proper, politically or otherwise, is not always a per-condition.

Emraan Hashmi’s Shaatir now titled Raja Natwarlal

UTV Motion Pictures today announced that their much anticipated con thriller with blockbuster actor-director jodi Emraan Hashmi and Kunal Deshmukh earlier titled Shaatir will now be called Raja Natwarlal.

"Ever since I heard this title, I've been after UTV to get it. It etches out my character perfectly and is extremely catchy.  Also, because it fits in so well with the space of the film, it will help us in promoting the film very well." added Emraan Hashmi.

Thrilled about the title change Kunal Deshmukh said "It's a fantastic title and takes the film to another level. I always wanted to present Emraan in a never seen before avatar. He plays a master street con artist- the modern day Natwarlal. So the title is just apt."

Emraan plays a modern day Natwarlal who along with his partner in crime, lives off short cons and day-to-day hustles in Mumbai. The movie progresses through many twists and turns, cons and more cons, leading to a big one. The film is a total masala entertainer, which will take you through the world of con and philosophies of conmen.
The film is slated for release on August 29th 2014.
